Today I had a meeting with another student in my program to discuss a small forum (maximum 40 people) we are organising on campus next February. We are searching for ideas and will be giving a short synopsis about what we will do in our next departmental meeting on the 14th so any advice would be appreciated.

Our forum will be entitled “Visualising Sustainability”. We would like to take a number of local speakers and moderate a forum in which we hear different perspectives regarding the relationship between technology, communication, and sustainability. I think it would be interesting to hear someone that would talk about mobile technology and sustainability or have a discussion about how social software can be used as a global medium to promote sustainability issues.

Any ideas for discussion topics or do you know people that have sustainability interests in the Vancouver area?

Relevance: Does anyone wonder where discarded computer technology ends up? According to this report entitled “The Digital Dump”, it is developing countries. It would be beneficial to hear first-person reports in a open-discussion format.

Much of the used computer equipment sent from the United States to developing countries for use in homes, schools and businesses is often neither usable nor repairable, creating enormous environmental problems in some of the world’s poorest places

I will be blogging from tagcamp. It looks pretty cool. One of my supervisors (Lee Iverson) will be speaking at 8pm entitled Why Tagging Works and When Tagging Doesn’t Work. Apparently, I am giving a talk tomorrow. Hmmm. How did THAT happen?

Relevance: Totally cool to be an environment surrounded by interesting people discussing something that is important to you.

I’m flying to tagcamp this weekend. There is an extensive listing of participants already. It should be a great opportunity to learn about different facets of tagging, folksonomies, and metadata.

Relevance: An opportunity to talk about my thesis project on tagging and meet people with similar interests. Can’t pass up this opportunity.

Testing…
This is Not a Simulation

In collaboration with Anthony Burke and David Ross

Intel’s Urban Atmospheres presents a single evening event at SFMoMA….

Where are we? Locative media, GPS in car navigation, and the barrage of emerging location technologies are upon us? Somehow more than ever we find ourselves lost in the sea of longitudes and latitudes. A new wireless numerology? We invite you to thrust yourself within a space where mobs, crowds, tuples, and even the wallflower are active participants in a delicious interactive architecture of interwoven patterns. Tags, RFID, and tessellated surfaces thrust themselves into a feedback system generously lubricated by alcohol.

Thursday 27 October 2005 (ONE NIGHT ONLY)

San Francisco Museum of Modern Art
151 Third Street (between Mission and Howard Streets)
San Francisco, CA

6:30 Artist talk by Edgar Arceneaux
7:00 Event featuring Testing…This is Not a Simulation
9:00 Close

** First 180 people receive active tags

$20 general; $10 SFMOMA members. Members may purchase one guest ticket at
the discounted price. Tickets are available at the Museum (no surcharge) or online.

Relevance: Opportunity to learn about tagging and location-based technologies in physical, urban spaces.

Peer-to-peer creative cross disciplinary lab on concepting interactive narrative pervasive applications. Attendees will form teams of three to five members and develop during this intense 5-day think tank concepts for pervasive narrative multi-user applications considering challenges, limitations and advantages of the choice of genre.

In this lab the attendees - all experienced professionals themselves - will serve as experts as well. Requirements for participation: At least two years experience in developing mobile or multi-user or mixed reality applications.

To apply for this lab please send an email to sagas@sagas.de with your cv stating your professional experience and skills as well as a special interest topic you would like to explore during the lab.

found via sagas mailing list

Relevance: Brings together a diverse group of people that share common interests in pervasive places. I would be interested in discussing the unintended consequences of using pervasive applications in everyday life. It is an excellent opportunity to visit the country that is home to the annual Mobile Phone Throwing World Championships.

Yesterday Socialight launched a service that enables you to receive messages left by people at certain locations called “sticky shadows“.

It is from NYC and another cool former academic project from ITP (e.g. dodgeball)

Relevance: How do you balance between receiving fun messages from friends vs. annoying messages from advertisers?

After reading about Suw Charman on David Weinberger’s blog, I am very interested to hear her speak and meet other bloggers at Northern Voice 2006, the blogging conference here in Vancouver, next February 10-11.

mini-bumper sticker complements of Rob Cottingham

If I could find some other student bloggers that are interested, I could organise a panel for us.

I will also attend moosecamp which is modelled on foocamp and barcamp here the day before.

Hope to see you there!!!!

update:
Schedule for Saturday is now up.

Relevance: I haven’t attended any blogging conferences yet and I am excited to meet fellow bloggers. If I was in NYC this week, I would be at Blogon. What would be really cool is if Vancouver had a tagging event like tagcamp as I would get to chill with fellow students into tagging like Sacha.
