March 2006

So I need to parse the del.icio.us tag RSS feeds and I am trying to learn python tonight. If anyone has any tips, I am welcome to suggestions as I want to look at people’s logs that I interview to see what I can gather.

Tonight we had our Spring Gala in our residence. It was great to get out and take my mind off my research and the other “major” issue going on in my life.

It is great to spend time among friends.

I had an amazing time in town at the IASummit 2006. I have taken photos which I posted on my flickr account.

I will blog about the sessions and stuff later. Tons of work to get back to.

Peter Morville’s presentation notes

Originally uploaded by atomiq.

I’m at the IASummit where Peter Morville (Ambient Findability) is the final speaker at the Setting the agenda for IA research panel. He is talking without powerpoint (naked) in a web2.0 kind of way.

I will update his key points later.

thesis24 Mar 2006 01:52 pm

I thought I would be able to make the social session tonight for the IASummit but I need to get more work done and I have to get business cards made tonight.

Yesterday I have an amazing meeting with my co-supervisor. It is very important to have someone that is passionate about your thesis topic. Tagging rocks (don’t ya know). We discussed my thesis research questions (he’s happy, I’m happy) and the interview questions for my second study on tagged information spaces (del.icio.us, citeulike, flickr). It is so cool that we use these spaces and we are able to see differences and similarities in how these spaces are perceived/used.

A quote from him that helped provide clarity for the development of my questions was to be able to let the participants speak in their own vocabulary, with their own words so that “they will reflect on their task space”. I am thinking about how the tools within these spaces are used differently than their intended use? How are the bounds of the space perceived differently with more “push” systems in which the creator of the digital content tags it (e.g. flickr (if not friend)) vs. “pull” systems in which the producer tags the content of others (del.icio.us, citeulike).

I am thinking about these information and conceptual spaces as they relate to tagged information spaces to better prepare for the focus group tomorrow. He will also be there so it should be a good discussion.

Although I can’t attend this as I am at the IASummit, it looks like it will be a great talk.

Title: “Wireless Sensor Networks in mHealth Applications”
Speaker: Ms. Karla Felix Navarro
When: 10:30 am, Monday March 27, 2006
Where: MacLeod Rm 418, University of British Columbia

Abstract:

As the worlds aged population grows many governments are looking to
remote healthcare monitoring solutions. It is certainly cheaper to keep
the elderly and infirm in their own homes rather than in aged-care
facilities. However will these remote and wireless monitoring devices
deliver what they promise? The medical profession will need strong
evidence before they embrace such techniques. In this work the authors
built a remote monitoring prototype which uses Motes, a PDA and a
network management application to show that commodity-based hardware
may provide one answer to the problem of remotely monitoring people in
their own homes. A novel network management approach for data fusion
and to the handling of the potentially huge amount of data is applied.

Speaker’s biography:

Karla Felix Navarro is a PhD candidate and a Lecturer in Computer
Networks at the Faculty of Information Technology, University of
Technology Sydney. She is a Cisco Certified Academy Instructor (CCAI)
for CCNP and CCNA courses, and was part of the Asia Pacific Authoring
team of the CCNA v3 online curricula. Karla holds 13 international
publications as primary author and co-author in the areas of Wireless
Sensor Network Applications, Online Learning, and Brain Computer
Interfaces. She has also been an IT Networking consultant in Mexico
and in Australia, and now works on a temporary basis for the National
Research Council of Canada as an IT Network Specialist.

ALL ARE WELCOME!

Scott Golder @ UBC

Special thanks today for Scott coming to talk about his tagging study at the University of British Columbia. It was a great talk and let to a number of interesting discussions.

I will post his slides when they become available.

Two questions that came out of the discussion:
Why don’t people retag?
What type of person is drawn to tagging?

I’m excited that I will be moderating a Birds of a Feather session at the IA Summit with Gene on Saturday at 5pm. It should be an excellent opportunity to get a pulse on the IA’s perspective of tagging and how it may differ from people in education, CSCW, or the social software community.

I have a list of topics I am interested in exploring and I look forward to meeting Gene Smith for the first time since I follow his blog. These may be useful topic areas to discuss.

Potential Topic Areas
Tagging environments use and why
Personal Stories about how came to tagging
Needs that tagging fulfills
Tagging and privacy
What features do you wish existed in the tagged spaces you use?
Any tips on “better” ways to share with tags
Changes in tagging strategies over time
Tagging and collaboration vs. tagging and sharing

Any suggestions?

apple_fired.jpg

This is simply classic. It is a google video of the poem that a former Apple employee attributes to how he got fired for being “unprofessional”.

from Scott Beale.
