Today I will be giving a presentation in my lab. I am not yet completely prepared so I will have to do some more work on the lab computer with screenshots.

Hopefully it will go well because I am excited to talk.

FuturePlay 2006: The International Academic Conference on the Future of Game Design and Technology

October 10-12, 2006,

The University of Western Ontario, London, Ontario, Canada

Scope of the Conference

The FuturePlay conference focuses on three main themes. The first theme, future game development, addresses academic research and emerging industry trends in the area of game technology and game design. The second theme, future game impacts and applications, includes academic research and emerging industry trends focused on designing games for learning, for gender, for serious purposes, and to impact society.

Finally, the third theme, future game talent, is designed to provide a number of industry and academic perspectives on the knowledge, skills, and attitude it takes to excel in the games industry.

Future Play addresses these issues through exciting and thought-provoking keynotes from leaders in academia and industry, peer-reviewed paper sessions, panel sessions (including academic and industry discussions), workshops (including design, technology, and career workshops), and exhibitions of posters, games, and the latest game technologies and supports from industry-leading vendors. Continuing with the tradition established by CGT and improved upon by last year’s conference, the highlight of the games exhibition is a peer-reviewed competition of games in three categories: Future (experimental) Games, Serious Games, and Student Games.

Paper submissions must present original, unpublished research or experiences. Late-breaking advances and work-in-progress reports from ongoing research are also encouraged to be submitted to Future Play.

Mission
The Come Out & Play Festival seeks to provide a forum for new types of public games and play. We want to bring together a public eager to rediscover the world around them through play with designers interested in producing innovative new games and experiences.

Oh yeah, and we want to have fun.

What
The Come Out & Play Festival is a street games fesitval dedicated to exploring new styles of games and play.

The festival will feature games from the creators of I love bees, PacManhattan, Conqwest, Big Urban Game and more.

From massive multi-player walk-in events to scavenger hunts to public play performances, the festival will give players and the public the chance to take part in a variety of different games. Come rediscover the city around you through play.

Why street games? Why a street games festival, you ask? Fair questions. Well, we like innovative use of public space. We like games which make people interact in new ways. We like games that alter your perception of your surroundings. But most importantly, we think games are great way to have fun.

Canadian Games Study Association Call for Papers

September 21-24, 2006, York University, Toronto

Following an inaugural meeting of CGSA at DiGRA 2005 in Vancouver, B.C., Jennifer Jenson and Suzanne de Castell applied for and received funding to bring together scholars, artists, games designers, researchers and students from across Canada to meet for a four day SSHRC-supported symposium examining the current and emergent “state of play” in Canadian Games Studies. Some central goals of this meeting are: to share, through papers, workshops and demonstrations, current models, tools and methods for advancing theory, research and development, and to bring together in productive dialogue some of the existing networks already established in Canada whose researchers work on games, digital games and play, This meeting will initiate a distinctively interdisciplinary Canadian journal devoted to games scholarship, research and development in Canada. A further purpose of these meetings is to broaden our relationships with others working in this area in order to better support our graduate students with a wider range of potential advisors, supervisors, teachers and examiners. Finally, we seek to build awareness about existing and emerging programs and courses in Canadian colleges, universities and institutes focused on game study, development, theory, and history and to invite dialogue between researchers and industry partners. (All in four days!)

In this “call for proposals,” we invite Canadian games researchers to submit their work for the usual kind of scholarly sessions: full papers, short papers, symposia, and workshops. In addition, we invite suggestions for other kinds of displays of work, including, but not limited to: in-game art, game demonstrations, and in progress development. We are particularly interested in proposals which involve sharing works in progress and which identify areas of challenge, new development and “growth points” in Canada. As this is principally a meeting to establish points of connections and directions for future research, we strongly encourage proposals which are seeking to push the boundaries of research, game development, history and theory of games and play, art, game architectures, and so on in relation to digital games and play.

Please note: This call is going out to ONLY members of the CGSA list. To be added to CGSA, please email jjenson@edu.yorku.ca. You must be living and working in Canada to submit a proposal. A limited amount of funding will be provided for those attending, including airfare and accommodation.

Proposals are due June 15, 2006.

Relevance for Fugitive project:
Will be submitting paper here. Excellent opportunity to build gaming connections in Canada.
