Vancouver is a great place for creative forms of expression to flourish in the areas of mobile technology and social media. I continue to be amazed at the quality of talent here. Tomorrow, Duane Storey will be a speaker at the first WordPress camp at the Network Hub. He will be speaking on mobile blogging because he has just launched the WPTouch iPhone theme in collaboration with Dale Mugford, one of his partners at BraveNewCode. Rebecca Bollwitt provided a fine review regarding her early impressions with screenshots. As well, Duane provides solid information about his theme on his blog.

As I don’t yet have an iPhone (I think I’m the only one if my circle without one), I am using iPhoney, an iPhone web browser simulator for designers to test out the look and feel of the theme on an iPhone. Looking at this theme, is definitely motivating me to get an iPhone. With a little help from Duane and following the well-written instructions, I was able to download the theme, upload it to my WordPress server, and activate it using iPhoney. The screenshots are of my blog on the iPhoney before and after with the WPTouch activated.

So, here in Vancouver we have a number of people that love/use/know drupal. In May, Vancouver Drupal Camp 2008 will take place.

Details are still being worked out. If you can volunteer or offer sponsorship, I’m sure the offer would be appreciated and you will get a cool title (e.g. Sponsor Consular). It also looks like the cost is reasonable for 2 days of fun + a cool t-shirt.

Details:

Date: May 9-10, 2008
Where: Friday sessions at SFU Wosk Centre for Dialouge (Hasting and Seymour) ~ Saturday sessions at Workspace (21 Water St., Gastown)

It was only a short 10 months ago that the inaugural Democamp Vancouver began and in early April “the island” will be hosting the first Democamp Victoria 01. It is a perfect opportunity for those in Vancouver and even Seattle to travel to Victoria to find out more about the tech scene there. You could carpool and spend the night in a cool B&B waking up to the fresh morning island air.

The Details - The Idea is your Demo

Your concept or idea should be developed enough to support a three minute presentation, but it is not necessary to have a working model to “demo” … it’s the idea that’s important! There are three minutes for delivery and three minutes for discussion (or 6 minutes to use however you see fit…previous attendees highly recommend time for interaction, questions, etc.). The time limit is strict so if you take two and a half minutes to setup your laptop, you only get thirty seconds to present (the gong hath no mercy).

Signing up to Present

Just show up with an idea, write it on the board, and get voted on to be one of the “main” presentations. Every presenter gives a 30 second elevator pitch before voting happens. Attendees vote and the 4 presentations with the most votes get a 6 minute slot.

You can read more info on the Barcamp Victoria page.

When: April 3rd, 2008, from 5:30pm-7:30pm

Where: 834 Johnson St. (Juliet Living Demo Space, a.k.a. the OLD peacock billiards place) [map]

Although I had heard about Picnik, the online photo-editing service, I didn’t try using it until yesterday after seeing a twitter message about the service. I have been using iPhoto as I can’t afford Photoshop. Below is an example of the first picture that I edited with Picnik. I am pretty excited with it and I think I will experiment with it on the batch of photo editing that I have to get done this weekend.

If you don’t have any plans on Thursday night, I would recommend coming to Democamp Vancouver 05. It is a great place to network and if you have something you would like to share (concept, product, idea), it is a great opportunity to do so. Boris and Megan will be organising it and I expect non-stop fun.

Demo Schedule

  • come in the door and post your demo idea on the board
  • 30 minutes of meeting other attendees (promote your idea, get votes!)
  • presentation process starts at 6:00pm
  • 30 second elevator pitches by all presenters
  • attendees vote on top 4
  • we will have 4 x 6 minute talks (time limit enforced, includes feedback time!)

Of course there will be Battledecks:

  1. 2 people from the crowd are chosen (by elimination or volunteering or voting…) and go head-to-head in DemoCamp’s installment of BATTLEDECKS
  2. Each contender is given a 6-to-8 page Keynote Presentation on the spot and will present their fabulous, ground-breaking, earth-shattering, mind-blowing business/project/idea/nonsense to the crowd, inspiring us all on whatever it is they are revealing.
  3. Think: “Gesture. Flow. Credibility. Jargon.” It will really help.
  4. Winner will be professed by crowd applause and cheering.

For those that attended Democamp Vancouver 04, you were witness to Linda Bustos‘ takedown of Jordan Behan. Can you last 3 minutes?

Launch Party Vancouver 2
Host: Shira Lazar

On Wednesday night I attended Launch Party with a Twiist co-organised by Launch Party Vancouver and Twiistup. It was the best event I have attended this year, I had been anticipating it since the first launch party and I knew it wouldn’t disappoint.

Drinks, music, tech friends (that can dance), cool local demos all in an awesome club. What more would you want mid-week? The fact Thursday was a write-off for most of the core people that stayed past one tells you it was an event not to miss. When was the last time you went to a club and had take out delivered there.

I have my calendar cleared for Launch Party 3 because it is getting better and better each time. Vancouver is a great city for tech geeks. So join the FB group and pack your dancing shoes so you don’t miss out next time.

So that’s the summary of the night, let me break it down further.

The Event

Launch Party Vancouver 2
Maura Rodgers of Strutta. Heather Vescent of Twiistup

The event began at 5pm and it took place upstairs at Republic, a bar/club downtown. As per the request I bought along Chicken a la King soup (non-perishable good) for the Vancouver Food Bank which Strutta provided boxes for. It was my first time being in this club and I wish I had shown up before 5pm so that I could have taken some pictures when it was empty, as I really like the aesthetics of the place. When I arrived at about 5:30pm, I was greeted by a Launch Party sign. I dropped off my coat, kept my knapsack containing my photo gear, and headed upstairs. On the far wall were displayed the different sponsors as well as on tvs around the upper level.

At the beginning people mingled around while drinking and chatting. We were provided with a drink ticket and appetizers. I spent alot of time talking with new people I’d met (see People section), so I barely had anything to eat.

Launch Party Vancouver 2
Erica, Lori, Monica, Caroline, Rebecca: Sporting their Sxip touques

There was an area where demos were displayed. As I tend to congregate among friends, I wasn’t aware of their location initially. The demos available were from Something Simpler, Sitemasher, Jiibe, The new Sxipper (thanks for the cool touques Lori!), and Handy Mobility responsible for LiveVote.

The organisers gave a short speech thanking everyone for attending including the sponsors and we socialised late into the night. Special thanks to Lyal Avery from Strutta who found us take-out sushi, wings, and pizza later in the evening when we were hungry. No need to leave the club — the food came to us :). The evening was a success and I am anticipating the next Launch Party Vancouver.

The People

I would like to provide some background and additional information about the event focusing on the people in attendance. Hats off go to Maura Rodgers, co-founder of Strutta who spearheaded a fabulous event. I met her prior to the first Launch Party and enjoyed hearing about life in California (the Valley and the City) during the dot.com days. Boris Mann wrote an excellent summary about what she is doing here as she is originally from the States. She is definitely a great addition to the Vancouver community, as indicated by his interview of her.

Moving here from the Valley, where there is no shortage of fun events for people to attend, I thought an event like LP for entrepreneurs, techies, marketers was missing here. There are lots of great events like democamp, barcamp, VEF, and they fill a need too. After work, I am just looking for good mingling and want to bring the people together in and around this city, who are sitting on great ideas but not everyone knows about them. Every month, we hope to showcase about 4-5 cool, early stage companies in the city. It will be very informal and fun and give the people, who are not competing in the decibel competition ;), a chance to warm up and be involved.

I met Shira Lazar of Shira Lazar Productions, who is a Canadian from Montreal now living in LA. She covers entertainment and tech issues in California. It was great to have her fly in as a host and interview featured companies and socialise with us throughout the evening. It is always cool to see Canadians being successful in the States. She will be hosting Twiistup 3 in January as well, so if you are in Venice, California I recommend you attend. Good times for all I’m sure.

At the last minute, Heather Vescent of Twiistup made the trip up and I’m glad she did. It was really by chance I met her as we just happened to be sitting down in the same spot and she introduced herself. We chatted so much that I didn’t really eat anything. We had a fascinating conversation about Facebook, social networking, and tech events in LA as she organises the monthly Los Angeles Geek Dinners. We also discovered that we have a number of common friends and she had just attended the Winnies organised by Irina Slutsky of Geek Entertainment TV.

Everyone had a great time networking and socialising that night, I’m looking forward to the next one.

Relevance: A great opportunity to socialise and network with tech people and entrepreneurs in the city.

Democamp Vancouver 04Last Thursday I attended Democamp Vancouver 04 at Workspace. It was the third one I attended and the event was well attended by local participants. The night began with Battledecks as Linda Bustos (above) beat Jordan Behan.

  1. 2 people from the crowd are chosen (by elimination or volunteering or voting…) and go head-to-head in DemoCamp’s installment of BATTLEDECKS

Next there were four people/teams that spoke about their demo for 4-6 minutes:

Afterwards we attended an after-party at Flux where we socialised and had food/drinks.

Good times for all.
